Study Island Review

After looking back at my original blog on Study Island, I still believe that it is a great resource for kids to have a better learning opportunity. Not only can students learn from this software, but they also become more familiar with the idea of using a computer. Some students do not have access to a computer at home, but when they are at school the class has scheduled lab time. They gain new learning skills and are better prepared for the Ohio Achievement Test.

It was interesting to see how much the Study Island program cost for an elementary school. The school district that I live in makes use of the Study Island program in their middle and elementary schools. It does seem a bit extreme to pay $8,000 for a program that lasts only for a year. I’m not sure how an educator puts a price tag on the development and growth of a child. So, a decision has to be made about the welfare of our children. Do we spend the money on a valuable resource that could only have an effect on a few children? Or it could promote further advancement for several students in the classroom? There are other software programs out there, such as Bailey’s Book House, Math Blaster, and The Phonics Game. Who should make the decision on the wellbeing of our children…the parents, administrators, taxpayers?
