Sexual Predators

The internet can be a wonderful, informative adventure. It can also a dangerous, and even deadly, place. It is easy to forget that not everyone online is who they appear to be. The incidence of sexual predators finding their victims online is becoming more and more prevalent. Children are very trusting. They believe that what they see online is true. They do not realize that you need to consider the source. They see information in print and that makes it believable.
People need to be very cautious with Myspace and Facebook. Anyone can create a profile to be whoever they want to be. It is important to not include identifying information – no address, birthdate, name of school, or pictures. Check out the Dateline story about cops posing as teens online, arranging a meeting and catching sexual predators. You will be surprised by what some of these men brought with them to the “meeting.”
It never ceases to amaze me how much personal, private information people put on the internet. Millions of people see this information – this includes potential employers, colleges, not to mention criminals. So, protect yourself. The internet is an endless supply of information. Use it wisely, and keep in mind that anything you post can be seen by others.
